Sewer Lines and Tree Roots

Tree Roots in Sewer Line

Stop tree roots sewer line problems this way. The red vertical lines are small 1.5-inch PVC pipes. Fill them with copper sulfate crystals and hot water and no more tree roots sewer line problems! Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

Tree Roots Sewer Line Tips

  • Poison soil surrounding the sewer line with copper sulfate
  • Install 1.5-inch PVC vertical pipes in the ground above the sewer line
  • Use a 2-inch hand auger to drill holes into the soil
  • Pour copper sulfate crystals into the pipe and add hot water

"The root control/elimination products that flush down a toilet do little to solve the problem in my opinion...... The chemicals often only burn those portions of the roots that actually contact the water flow."

DEAR TIM: The sewer line in my house recently backed up. The plumber who cleaned out the line discovered tree roots were the problem. I've seen products that you flush down the toilet to solve this problem.

Are they effective? Is there a better, more long-term solution? I really don't have the money to install a new sewer line. Chuck S., St. Cloud, MN

DEAR CHUCK: Tree roots in sewer lines are probably one of the top ten plumbing problems, especially in older homes. Mother Nature has equipped many trees with sophisticated sensing capabilities.

Why Do Tree Roots Enter Sewer Pipes?

The trees send out feeder roots in all directions in a search for both nutrients and water. The trenches that contain sewer lines rarely contained compacted soil. Roots are naturally drawn to this disturbed soil.

How do Tree Roots Enter Sewer Pipes?

hand-powered earth auger

Here is a wonderful hand-powered earth auger. It drills a two-inch diameter hole with ease.

Tree roots enter sewer pipes through small cracks in the joints between individual pieces of pipe. Old clay pipes often had the joints packed with mortar.

This mortar shrinks as it hardens allowing a tiny micro-crack to develop in the female hub of the old sewer pipe.

If tiny feeder roots discover these cracks they enter the pipe and continue their search for moisture and food. Once inside the pipe the roots enlarge and gorge themselves on the plentiful supply of water and food. I have actually taken out grotesque roots that have been over ten feet long and nearly one inch thick in diameter.

Does RootX Kill the Tree Roots?

RootX and other liquid products you pour into your toilet, in my opinion, treat the symptoms to a small degree, but they do NOT SOLVE the problem.

Water flow in a typical sewer pipe only fills a small percentage of the bottom cross section of the pipe. The chemicals often only burn those portions of the roots that actually contact the water flow.

Some of the chemicals are drawn into the root system but not enough, in my past experience, to completely wipe out the roots. The tree continues to grow and send roots out to take advantage of the underground oasis.

How Can You Stop the Roots From Entering the Sewer Pipe?

You stop tree roots from entering the sewer pipe by poisoning the soil on the outside of the sewer pipe. The tree roots will not enter this soil and thus can't get into the sewer pipe.

I've solved this problem for customers and at an old house, I used to own. You need to install a series of small vertical pipes above the sewer line that resemble miniature oil wells.

Copper sulfate crystals are put into the pipes along with hot water. The hot water dissolves the copper sulfate and this solution enters the soil above and around the sewer pipes.

Copper is a natural biocide and tree roots, algae, moss, or any living thing will avoid the copper-saturated soil.

copper sulfate crystals

These are large copper sulfate crystals. The come in 50-pound bags. CLICK THE IMAGE to have them delivered to your home.

Will the Copper Sulfate Kill the Tree?

No, the copper sulfate will not kill the tree. The tree roots will just avoid the copper-tainted soil and go find other water and nutrients.

How Do You Locate the Sewer Line?

Your best chances of success will happen if you can find a company that sends a small camera into the sewer line. By looking at a video monitor, the best camera operators can pinpoint the exact location outside where the roots are entering the pipe.

What's more, with electronic sensing equipment the professional can tell you the depth and path of the sewer pipe below the surface of the ground at this location. Armed with this data, you can permanently solve the problem.

CLICK HERE to get FREE & FAST BIDS from local drain cleaning companies.

How Do You Drill the Holes for the Small Vertical Pipes?

Using a simple earth auger or large drill, you will drill a vertical hole down towards the sewer pipe.

IMPORTANT: Do not start to drill holes in your yard or the public right of way until you've reached out to Call Before You Dig - 811. This nationwide service will come out within 48-72 hours and mark where any buried utilities. The last thing you want to do is poke a hole in a buried gas line, water line, or get ZOTTED by drilling into a buried electric service cable!

A 2 or 2.5-inch diameter hole works best as it provides plenty of room to insert a standard schedule 40 1.5 inch PVC pipe into the hole.

Stop drilling when the hole is about 24 to 30 inches above the top of the sewer pipe. Slide the pipe into the hole and glue a threaded female adapter equipped with a plug onto the end of the pipe at the surface. Make sure this is flush with the soil so that lawnmowers do not cut it off.

Can I Use City Records to Locate the Sewer Line?

Hand-powered Earth Auger

I am ready to get to work. I made sure no underground utilities other than the sewer line were in my path.

Yes, you can use city records to locate the sewer line that runs between your house and the city sewer in the street or alley.

The records often will show you where the sewer tap was installed as it entered your property. You should be able to determine where the sewer line leaves your home. The plumber who installed the sewer line usually tries to install it in a straight line.

If you can't find a company with a sewer camera, use municipal sewer records to locate your sewer tap and try to estimate where the sewer line might be. Insert a number of PVC pipes in your yard hoping that you spot them above and near the sewer line.

How Much Copper Sulfate Should be Used?

Try to fill the vertical pipe halfway with the copper sulfate crystals. You can have the copper sulfate delivered to your home. CLICK HERE to order some. You'll need one or two 50-pound bags for sure.

Some home centers may carry them. Immediately pour hot water into the pipe until it flows out the top. The hot water will begin to dissolve the copper sulfate and then this solution will begin to seep into the soil above and around the sewer pipe. Tree roots do not like soil that has been treated with copper sulfate and they will avoid it completely. Add crystals as needed and pour hot water into the pipe every four months or so to stop those pesky sewer backups!

Imagine you live in a peaceful large thriving city called Blotonati that has its own laws and regulations.

Far far away from Blotonati, across the sea, is a smaller hamlet named Mordorshire that has it's own rules and regulations. One day though, the people that control the lives of the residents of Mordorshire decide to pass a new rule that says:

"If any resident of Mordorshire goes on a journey and stops by any shop or home in Blotonati, those people in Blotonati have to be nice to the Mordorshire resident. They also have to promise to forget the name of the Mordorshire resident if that's what the Mordorshire resident wants and desires. Furthermore, if the Blotonati people don't follow this rule, they can be fined $10,000,000."

If you lived or ran a business in Blotonati wouldn't you be pissed? After all, you stay and live in Blotonati. You didn't travel to Mordorshire! They came to you.

Why do the laws of Mordorshire, where you don't live nor work, have anything to do with the way you run your life or business in Blotonati?

Granted, if you traveled to Mordorshire, it's expected that you obey their rules and laws WHILE YOU'RE IN Mordorshire.

DEAR WANDA: You’re asking the right questions. The last thing you want to discover once you’re in your birthday suit in your new bathroom is that your remodeler created a small corner shower that has you bumping into the walls and door.

Are Glass Corner Showers Easy to Install?

Yes, a corner shower with glass panels is easy to install. There are several steps, but if you can follow directions you can install one.

As you might imagine, I’ve installed quite a few showers, many with custom shower glass.

Many showers with glass panels require bracing so the glass doesn't move back and forth as the door opens.

glass corner shower brace

This adjustable brace keeps the top of the glass panel in one place so it doesn't move. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

Watch this video to see how easy it is to install a neo-angle shower door.

Are Glass Corner Showers Easy to Clean?

Yes, if you have a squeegee in the shower and use it to get the water drops off the walls and glass, your corner shower will look new all the time.

Currently, the glass shower enclosures are the rage because they’re so sleek and easy to clean. I had one in the house I just sold and will be installing several of these glass showers in the new home I intend to build.

Do Corner Shower Tubs Leak?

Yes, a corner shower tub can leak if it doesn't have the required turned-up flange on the corner edges.

I want to warn you about corner shower tubs. I frequently see these fixtures advertised and feel some are misleading. I’ll never forget a job I did about 30 years ago where an architect insisted on using a first-generation acrylic tub as a shower fixture.

This tub was promoted as being good for a shower, but it had no flange on the edges where the walls of the shower contacted the tub unit. I told the architect it was a mistake and that there would be future leaks.

He insisted that careful caulking would create a permanent seal. We caulked it, under written protest, with his on-site supervision. Six months later there were serious leaks into the living room below. Since I had my written release from damage, I was immune from the warranty claims made by the owner.

CLICK HERE to get FREE & FAST BIDS from local contractors to install a corner shower.

Is Caulk the Best Way to Seal A Shower?

Caulk is not the best way to seal a shower. The shower itself must be designed to shed water to the drain. Caulk is not to be used as a primary line of defense against leaks.

The bottom line is that if you decide to use one of these classy corner tubs in conjunction with a shower, be sure it has a flange on the two edges that contact the corner walls.

Shower Base Flange

This is a common upturned flange for a shower base. The cement board and tile overlap it. You can see how it would be impossible for water to get to the wood walls. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

Furthermore, be sure you figure out how you’re going to get into and out of the shower safely without stepping over any tall curbs. Finally, be sure the deck of the tub where the glass enclosure goes slopes back toward the tub so that water that splashes onto this surface flows to the tub drain.

Corner Glass Shower

This corner shower looks like it’s cramped, but there is plenty of room so you don’t bang your elbows on the walls. PHOTO CREDIT: Tim Carter

What is the Best Corner Shower Size?

The best corner shower size is one that's 42 inches on each leg that projects out from the corner. A neo-angle corner shower might be your best bet. They come 42x42, 38x38, and 36x36.

To prevent bumping your elbows in a corner shower unit, I suggest the shower wall dimensions be at least 36 inches by 36 inches as they come out of the corner. Usually, the shower-door manufacturers want you to provide at least 24 inches along the neo-angle clipped corner so they can get a door that will be easy to enter and exit the shower.

The shower door in the above photo is about 22 inches wide. You can see why you need 24 inches on the clipped neo-angle.

When you draw this configuration on a blank piece of plywood or your garage floor with a pencil, you’ll discover that you do end up with plenty of room.

If you want a larger shower for any number of reasons, be sure the walls of the shower as they come out of the corner are at least 42 inches. A larger 48-inch corner shower will give you an abundant play or a luxury shower experience.

Will a Bench Work in a Corner Shower?

If you decide to have your plumber and remodeler construct a custom tile corner shower, I urge you to include a corner shower bench. You’ll discover that this is a great place to sit and relax.

It’s also a great place to allow you to place your foot so you don’t have to bend over so far to wash your feet and lower legs. My guess is it would be handy if you shave your legs. Since I don’t shave mine, I wouldn’t know.

Can You Install Shelves in the Corner?

Yes, you can install all different types of shelves in the corner. Molded showers have them built in.

Don’t hesitate to install some corner shower shelves for all of your personal cleaning and grooming supplies. You don’t want these on the bench or shower seat. If you decide to go with the nice metal corner shower baskets, be sure they are stainless steel or nickel.

Avoid chrome-plated steel. I tested a chrome one in a corner shower I have in the house I just bought, and it started to rust in less than nine months.

Should the Shower Curb Be Level?

The curb to the shower needs to be level for the glass walls and door to rest on, but the narrow width of the curb should slant in towards the drain so water doesn't pool on the curb.

It’s mission critical that any curb that your tile setter or remodeler builds for your new shower must slant in towards the shower. I also urge you to use solid stone for the top of this curb instead of ceramic tile. Each grout line in between tiles on a curb is a place for water to penetrate. Solid stone caps on a curb minimize leak points. Be sure the mitered seams of the stone pieces are filled with waterproof epoxy.

The marble curb in my existing corner shower was installed out of level. I didn't install this curb.

The marble actually slopes out towards the bathroom so that water ponds on the marble against the shower door frame. I’ve caulked this disaster numerous times, but it still leaks. I have to carefully squeegee off the water from this curb after each shower. It’s a nuisance to say the least.

How Do You Clean Acrylic Showers?

You clean acrylic showers using liquid soap and a non-abrasive cleaning pad. Do NOT use any abrasive cleaners as you'll scratch the soft glossy acrylic.

If you decide to purchase an acrylic corner shower, pay very close attention to the written cleaning instructions that are almost always attached to the unit when it’s delivered. If you use the wrong cleaners, you’ll permanently scratch the shiny smooth surface. To keep the plastic surface looking brand new, just use a squeegee after each shower to get all the water droplets off the surface.

A Bucket of Water and Real Whitewash

Clogging Toilet

You often don’t need a plunger to unclog a toilet. Just use 3 or 4 gallons of water from a bucket. (C) Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

A Bucket Of Water

Question #1: Tim, I was really grossed out this past weekend. A toilet clogged in our home and while using a normal plunger some of the nasty water squirted up on me. It was horrible. Then you have to clean the yucky plunger. ICK!!! Is there a safer and more sanitary way to unclog a toilet? Becky, Scottsdale, AZ

Has this happened to you? I know you’ve had to deal with a clogged toilet before, but what about the splash back? It’s pretty nasty. I’ve got good news for you and Becky. There’s an easy and fast way to unclog a toilet that doesn’t involve you using the black bulb of nastiness in the toilet bowl.

I’ve been a master plumber since age 29. I’m naturally inquisitive and I thoroughly enjoyed both my high school and college physics classes.

Years ago as a young man I noticed two things about toilet clogs. The first was that when a clog happened and you flushed the toilet, the water would rise up to the top of the bowl and sometimes overflow. Talk about a gross mess! I discovered how to quickly take off the lid of the tank and lower the flapper valve to stop the flow of most of the water into the tank to minimize the flood.

But then I noticed often after a few minutes or even an hour, the water level in the bowl would drop back down to normal. That meant some water was leaking past the clog. I thought about these things and decided to experiment. I remembered a simple formula from my physics classes: Force equals mass times acceleration

My thought was to dump the heavy water as fast as possible into a toilet bowl. This would produce a large force to free the clog. I filled a smaller bucket with water, perhaps two gallons, and poured it as fast as I could into the clogged toilet bowl without splashing it all over the place.

It’s important to realize I aimed the column of water from the bucket directly at the bottom of the bowl where you see the toilet colon passageway disappear. The water level in the bowl started to rise and just before it was to overflow the rim of the bowl, the toilet flushed on its own. The rush of heavy water from the bucket cleared the clog!

This method doesn’t always work the first time, but I started to notice the water level in the bowl would lower faster. This meant more water was passing the clog faster which meant I was making progress. I’ve even used this same method in hotel rooms using the waste can in the bathroom as my bucket.

I taped a quick video showing exactly how I unclog toilets with a bucket of water. You can go to my AsktheBuilder website to watch it. Just go to: https://www.askthebuilder.com/clogged-toilet/

Real Whitewash

Question #2: Hey Tim, is it still possible to do real whitewashing like I remember reading in the Tom Sawyer book? I want to whitewash my interior brick fireplace that has the horrible 80s look. Do they still make real whitewash? Can you tint it a color? I see cable TV shows where people are adding water to paint to make whitewash. Is this the best way to do it? Rachael, Knoxville, TN

Have you been fooled like Rachael by watching those home improvement cable TV shows? BEWARE of the information on some of them as it’s just not right. Thinned paint is not whitewash. If you add too much water to paint, you thin down the glue that allows paint to stick to something. It’s a horrible idea and all those promoting substituting paints for real whitewash should be lashed with a wet fettuccine noodle!

Whitewash is a simple mixture of lime, salt, and water. Whitewash, once mixed, is liquid rock. When you apply it to a clean surface and it cures, it’s far more durable than paint. Whitewash can last for many decades.

The good news is you can still purchase hydrated lime in bags. It’s very inexpensive. Salt is also a cheap commodity. Better yet, you can colorize whitewash using dried pigments that are also easy to get. Stamped concrete installers use these dry-shake pigments all the time to add color concrete.

I whitewashed a huge room addition decades ago to match a 1920s brick house that had the original whitewash on it. The original coating was dirty and the owner loved that look. I mixed black and brown pigments in different batches to get exact matches with those aged sections of the house.

I’ve got step-by-step photos of whitewashing a brick fireplace at my AsktheBuilder website. The recipe I used is also there as well as sources of the dry pigments. I’ve also got some great tips for the first-time whitewasher. Go to: https://www.askthebuilder.com/whitewash-fireplace-diy/

Men's Crusher Hat Keeps You Cool and Shaded

Three years ago I wore a wide-brimmed hat all summer as I re-roofed my house. It was an ill-fitting leather hat that cooked my skull. I wish I had had the Duluth Trading Men's Crusher Hat that I tested yesterday while doing amateur radio at the historic Pumpkin Seed Bridge over the Pemigewasset River in central New Hampshire!

Here are a side and back view. You can see how it keeps the sun off my neck. The upper sides of the hat are a mesh allowing air to cool my bald spot. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

I'm praying for a Morse code contact. Doing low-powered high-frequency radio in a narrow gorge is not the best way to capture invisible radio waves from the ether. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

Crusher Hat Preserves Duluth Trading Heritage

I've been a fan of Duluth Trading gear for decades. I was one of their first customers. I remember clearly when they started selling products to contractors.

Before the Crusher Hat arrived, I already knew it was going to be excellent. CLICK HERE to order one.

It's pretty obvious this hat works. My face is fully shaded and I'm not suffering from heat exhaustion because my perspiration can evaporate through the polyester mesh upper sides of the hat. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

Four Colors

The Crusher hat you see on my head is their Steel Blue. They had two other colors that I was quite interested in, the Frosted Moss (a very interesting green), and Bark. It's a bold medium brown color. Let me know in the comments below what you think of them. CLICK HERE to see the colors using the change color tool in the right column.

Fit is Perfect | Crusher Hat Sizes are Accurate

I have a tough time finding hats that fit. My wife, She Who Must Be Obeyed (Kathy), tells me it's because of my ego. But I digress.

Suffice it to say, the 2XL size was perfect for my head. On hot days I know I'll appreciate the CoolDry® sweatband inside the hat.

You can see through to my hand inside the hat. The top and brim are solid to protect you from the searing UV and IR waves from the demon sun. The sides, though, are an open mesh allowing cooling breezes to envelope your noggin with fresh air. Copyright 2018 Tim Carter

The Federal Trade Commission requires me to tell you that Duluth Trading sent me the Crusher Hat for free. After wearing it, I'd gladly pay for it. It does me no good to impune my integrity by telling you it's a great hat if it sucks. You'll never again trust one of my reviews.

Kevin's Yellow Bricks

Kevin composed an email to me late yesterday. He's not in a good mood and this email is 100% responsible for this newsletter.

I felt you need to hear from someone else what I've preached in the past:

"Today I made a mistake by actually listening to a Lowe's store associate's advice and applied a product to my brick patio.

I had some mildew growing between my brick patio over the paver sand and the associate advised me to use product called Moss Out for Lawn by Lilly Miller. So I applied it over my patio and all the bricks are now yellow. I am so disappointed. Is there anything I can do to clean it up? Please help."

After reading his email, these thoughts flowed through my head:

Would you get in a commercial airliner to travel if you knew the captain with the four stripes on each shoulder of her/his shirt had NEVER FLOWN an airliner before?

Would you have surgery done on your body if you discovered the person in the green scrubs had never cut someone up much less sewed them back together again?

Should I give more examples?

WHY WOULD YOU EVER TRUST THE ADVICE GIVEN BY SOMEONE IF THEY'VE NEVER DONE THE JOB BEFORE OR USED THE PRODUCT?

After the Lowe's associate gave his advice, Kevin's polite questions to the Lowe's associate should have been:

"Have you ever used this product before on patio brick?"

"Before coming to work here at Lowe's, how many years did you work out in the field cleaning patio brick?"

It's YOUR MONEY. It's YOUR HOME. You have every right to ask questions before you invest in a product HOPING it will work.

All Kevin had to do was come to me FIRST and I would have told him to use my certified organic Stain Solver.

Dan's Quick UnClog Tool

I'm so lucky to have great friends. One happens to be Dan. He lives in Colorado. He and I are going on a little-man self-discovery trip mid September to hike and do amateur radio out in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks.

He emailed me after the last newsletter saying,

"Have you ever recommended this product? It rules! I've used it many, many times."

Cobra Zip-It

It's the Cobra Zip-It drain cleaning tool. It works best on bathroom sink and tub drains that are clogged with hair.

The barbs on the shaft grab onto hair that's tangled up in the drain stopper mechanisms. It is a great invention. CLICK HERE to get one.

Keep in mind, I'm a master plumber and have no fear of taking off the tiny nut on the back of the tailpiece of a bath sink drain to be able to make it like new.

My response to Dan was:

"I've not.

I know it works, but it doesn't get all the hair out.

I just take out the lift lever in the tailpiece and get the entire drain clean.

While doing that, I'm able to get a bottle brush down the tailpiece to get rid of all the FOUL biofilm on the sidewalls of the tailpiece.

That invention, while very handy, just does a small part of what needs to be done."

That inexpensive plastic tool will save you HUNDREDS of dollars by not having to have a plumber come out to do what I can do in three minutes.

If hair is clogging your drain, the Cobra Zip-It should work for you.

DECEPTIVE Product Description WARNING

On Mother's Day morning, my youngest daughter chatted me up from Puerto Rico. She's working at a deluxe boutique hotel in Old San Juan and loving it down there.

If you decide to go there, PLEASE let them know you heard about this magic place from Ask the Builder.

She needed to know how to safely strip old paint at one of the hotel properties. I sent her to a website that has a special paint stripper that can remove lots of paint at one time.

While there, I noticed they sold a deck cleaner. Since Kathy and I sell the best certified organic deck cleaner out there, Stain Solver, I just had to click the link.

Here's the FIRST THING I read. It was the TOP CONTENT on the page. I've substituted four X's for the product name to stay out of legal trouble:

"XXXX Deck Cleaner is a highly-effective, biodegradable, concentrated, and safe deck cleaning solution for exterior use on wood decking, siding, shakes, and outdoor furniture. XXXX Deck Cleaner, one of the best wood deck cleaners on the market, is also recommended for removing dirt, mildew stains, and algae from composite decking, concrete, stucco, vinyl siding, fiberglass, and most outdoor furniture. This eco-green product is perfect for any deck you wish to restore, large or small, because it is available in one- and five-gallon pails."

That got my interest so I looked on the page to find the MSDS sheet so I could see WHAT was in the deck cleaner.

It only took me about 20 seconds to discover the product was just CHLORINE BLEACH. The MSDS sheet showed the product contained sodium hypochlorite. That's the fancy chemical name for chlorine bleach.

Allow me ask you a question or two or three. When you see the word "biodegradable" what pops into your head?

Do you feel the product is safe?

Do you feel it's *green* or a warm and fuzzy product?

Does that word cast a spell on you making you like the product?

Did you know that chlorine bleach is TOXIC to all vegetation and many other living organisms?

Would you apply chlorine bleach to your outdoor furniture, you know the ones that have fabric cushions? After all, the label says it's SAFE to use on outdoor furniture!!

The actual definition of biodegradable is: "capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms."

I don't see how chlorine bleach fits that description because it KILLS bacteria and other living organisms!!!

But if you're a chemist, perhaps you can explain how some bacteria or organism will eat the chlorine bleach first!

BOTTOM LINE: STOP TRUSTING product descriptions. STOP trusting people who have NO EXPERIENCE.

Do some simple research. It only took me TWENTY SECONDS to see that deck cleaner was a TOXIC product.

Kevin could have PREVENTED his NIGHTMARE by READING THE LABEL on the Moss Out product .

My guess is it said: "Product contains muriatic ACID."

That's enough for today.
