Coping Saw Video

Have you ever cut two pieces of woodwork at 45 degrees and go to put them together and they do not match? This happens when you cut perfect 45 degree angles with your miter box saw, but the room corners are not 90 degrees. How do we fix this? Cut corners like the old German carpenters. Cope the corner.

It is not necessary to cut angles on both pieces of trim. Cut a straight edge on one piece and place it in the corner. Then you slide the other piece with the profile cut on the end into the first piece. How do you do that?

You can either trace the profile onto the piece of trim from the other section. But that is to hard. An easier way is to use your miter saw. Cut a 45 degree angle with the outside angle. Then take the coping saw and cut the wood at the point where the face of the woodwork meetings the cut end. Cut it back at a slight angle.

This will match up with the other piece with very little or no gap at all.

Gutter Cleaning Video

The fall is a great time of year. However, those leaves get every where. Including in your gutters. How do you get the leaves out of the gutters? The are a few alternatives.

A time consuming method is to set up a ladder, climb up with a bucket and pick the leaves out of the gutter and place them in the bucket. Be sure not to over-reach or the ladder could become unstable. You have to climb up and down every few feet to move the ladder.

If your roof has a low pitch, you can climb up on the roof, sit down next to the gutter and pull the leaves out. You can place the leaves in a bucket, a bag or just threw them onto the ground.

OR!!! You can use a power blower! These power blowers are great for blowing out of the gutters and off the roof. Be sure the roof is dry and safe to walk on. Also, wear gym shoes with good traction. The leaves blow off easier if they are dry.

If you have a lot of leaves on your roof and in your gutters, try a power blower. They are quick and easy.

Caulking Video

Just before you paint new or existing woodwork, you need to patch the area where the woodwork touches another surface. To fill in these areas, get a professional caulk gun, acrylic or latex caulk that matches the color of the paint, a bucket of water and a tile grout sponge.

Pick up a good caulk gun at a paint store that sells better grade tools. A tile grout sponge is available at ceramic tile stores. These sponges differ from standard sponges because they have nice soft rounded edges.

Cut the tip to match the size of the crack you are filling. Too big of a hole in the caulk tube and you will have a real mess. Caulk about two feet at a time. Wipe off the excess caulk with your finger. Then, follow with the damp sponge to smooth out the patch and remove any caulk from the surrounding woodwork.

Done right, your paint job will look a lot better without the gaps between the woodwork and the walls.

Rototiller Video

Need to level an area for a garden or other outside project? Try a rototiller. There are smaller ones available from rental stores. These dig up the dirt and make it easier for you to move the dirt around. The smaller baby tillers are light weight and easy to handle. They have smaller 3.5 horsepower engines and are only about 18" wide.

Use the rototiller to cut the dirt several inches deep by making passes in various directions. This breaks up the ground making it easier to move. Once you have moved that loosened dirt out of the way, repeat the process until you have worked down to the desired depth.

Just let the tiller do the work of breaking up the dirt. Then, you just move the dirt around.

Driveway Repair Video Transcript

You know, it's not too late in the season to patch those pesky cracks in either your concrete or blacktop driveway. Now what I want to talk about first is concrete. Maybe you've got a small crack in a driveway or sidewalk or patio and it could be a big crack even.

There are all types of different things to use but I'll tell you what I prefer. I like the urethane caulks. Why do I like those? They're sticky, they are very elastic so that if the concrete moves the caulk will move with it in the future.

How do you start the repair? If it's a small crack, maybe an eighth to a quarter-inch wide, you can just shoot the caulk right into it. But let's say it's a larger crack. Sometimes you'll need to buy the foam backer rods and you pack that down into the crack so that you're only putting in about a half-inch to maybe three-eighths inch depth of caulking material.

Go ahead and squeeze the caulk out of the gun. Let it get into the crack. Smooth it with a stick if you have to. If it's a wide crack or if you want to use your finger, go ahead and do that but sometimes put a little bit of paint thinner on it to get a really nice smooth appearance.

Blacktop driveways are basically the same. What you want to do first is to make sure you pick the right patching material. Now frequently you'll go out and you'll find these blacktop crack fillers. Well, there are two different types. One of the materials happens to have a whole lot more rubber in it and that makes it more flexible and it'll stay longer in the cracks.

Now those products typically cost more money they can be up to about 13 dollars a gallon (2001 pricing). So try to find those. The more expensive they are, the better.

Now make sure that you go ahead and follow the directions on the label. Frequently they say to clean the crack out. Make sure it's dry and then if the crack is deep you might have to get backer rod as well to put in there or fill it partially with dry sand.

Go ahead and trim the nozzle on the bottle, squeeze it in and try not to get a lot of stuff beyond the crack. If it's really really hot weather, you may have to put a little sand on it so you don't track it into your house.

And in almost all cases don't drive on the repaired cracks for at least a day. I told you sealing cracks really isn't that hard you just have to act soon winter’s gonna be here soon.

Concrete Driveway Sealer Video

Concrete driveways are great, but you do not always know if they will installed correctly. In the Tri-state area, a concrete driveway that was installed properly will withstand anything Mother Nature throws at it. But if it was not properly installed or if you are not sure, you better seal it. You can easily apply an application of a silane - siloxane sealer.

First, clean the driveway, brush off all the loose material and be sure it is dry. Be sure to purchase the right sealer. Look on the label for the words silane/siloxane and water repellent. Do not buy silicone sealers. They are bad because they form a film on the surface that does not breathe.

Get a sprayer with the a hand pump. Pour in the sealer and completely spray the driveway. The sealer will dry clear and not change the color of the concrete. It is a simple job. Maybe not as easy as Tim is demonstrating. (Watch the video.)

Tool Rental Video

There are lots of tool rentals stores in the Cincinnati area. These stores have an assortment of tools, large and small, to make your job easier. Here are some of the items you can rental.

Man lifts are great for inspecting your roof, cleaning gutters or painting your house, if you do not like using ladders.

A wood chipper is a great tool to rent if you need to get rid of some brush in your yard. Or if you are removing a tree. You can create your own mulch with these chippers.

Baby backhoes are great for working in a small area or getting between houses that are close together.

There are electric jack hammers available. They come with a variety of bits for busting that hole in your concrete.

Need a hole in a brick or concrete wall? Rent a demolition hammers. Insert the bit and blast that hole in the wall.

Have a ceramic tile project coming up? Try a diamond tile cutter. They are water cooled and go through tile like a hot knife through butter.

A vibratory compacter is like your own personal steamroller. They are great for compacting soil, gravel for that patio or large blacktop patches.

Tool rental places also rent small hand tools, such as routers and drills. Check them out when you need that special tool for your next home project.

Nail Guns Video

Using a hammer and a nail set is a dangerous way at drive in finish nails. You can miss the nail and mark up the woodwork you are installing. A great alternative is a nail gun. There are two types - pneumatic or impulse nails.

The pneumatic nail gun requires an air compressor and air hose. These are now available in smaller sizes for the home owners. They handle a variety of nails from small finishing nails to nails 2" in length.

There is another style nailer that does not require an air compressor. It has its own built-in engine. It has a fuel cell, a battery and a spark plug. This gun can be taken any where with no air hose. Just pull the trigger and it fires the nail.

These nail guns are affordable or you can rent them if you have a one time project. These nailers make your job look better, go faster and a lot more fun.

Foundation Watering Video

Foundation Watering

During very dry weather, it is just as important to water your foundation as it is to water your grass and plants. This is especially true if you have a shallow foundation, that is one that is only about 30" deep.

What can happen if the ground is too dry? The soil can actually dry out so much, that it can fall and the weight of the house pushes the foundation down. Resulting in a foundation crack. How do you stop that? You water the foundation.

One way of watering the foundation is to place a soaker hose around the building and let it run for a day or so.

If you are building a new home, it is a great time to put in some drain pipe down by the footer. Surround the foundation with the pipe, making sure the drain holes are facing down. At some point, bring a filler tube up to the surface. Then when it is extremely dry, just place a hose in the riser pipe and let it slowly run for a day or so. That will get water right down the foundation footer.

Water around the foundation if Mother Nature is not doing the watering for free.

Architectural Woodwork Video

If you want to change the look of a house and make it look like an older style home, just change some woodwork. For example, you can remove the standard door frame woodwork and install new Victorian style trim.

First, you need to remove the existing wood trim. Using a hammer and pry bar, carefully pull up the existing trim and set it aside.

To obtain the Victorian appearance, you can use a trim having a base block. Then the casing sits on top of the base block. Install a bead across the top of the door. Put a header on top of that and add a special crown molding cap.

Once installed, you will have changed the appearance of your house. You can check the yellow pages under Woodworking for specialty stores that can custom make the trim you require.

Fill the nail holes and add a coat of paint, and you will have your Victorian look. It is that simple.
